I need this on DVD.
Eat Pray Love is the latest chapter in the “magical white woman” mythology, and it’s sort of perfect that Sandra Bullock’s Oscar came from a thematically similar role that Julia Roberts turned down.
The central conceit of Eat Pray Love is that people of all different cultures and creeds flock to and appreciate Julia’s “Liz Gilbert” character like she’s an Anthropologie-clad messiah. Everybody adores Liz Gilbert, despite the fact that nothing appealing or sympathetic about her character was written into the script. Whatever is winning about the fictional Gilbert comes from Roberts’ track record in past roles—- when Liz Gilbert cries in India, all I see is Shelby at the salon needing juice.
And yet, as soon as she comes to town, Gilbert is flanked by friendly foreigners, immediately invested in her well-being, concerned for her mental state, and consumed with a pressing desire to keep track of her progress when it comes to her goal: self-discovery through travel. They are flattered to know her journey includes them as need-fulfilling objects that litter the way.
It’s like that animated sequence from Mary Poppins, where Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke disappear into a chalk drawing and sing “It’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary.” Even the animals chime in to make sure Mary knows how great the world is when she’s around.
Penguins fawn over her during tea time, adding, “Anything for you, Mary Poppins!” “You’re our favorite person!” And, probably, in the extended version, “You’re so thin, Mary Poppins!” “You look half your age!” “We’re so honored you’ve decided to embark on an introspective tour of your own feelings in our modest little third world swamp.” “Would you like a henna tattoo?” “How about a lover you’re not quite sure about opening your heart to?” “Maybe some gnocchi?”
“A most mediocre person can be the object of a love which is wild, extravagant, and beautiful as the poison lilies of the swamp.”
— Carson McCullers, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe
LOVE this little pairing…
Always Sunny. There’s not enough salt in the world for her!
Went to South Philly to see It’s Always Sunny shoot a scene, it was a lot of fun. Took this picture at the end when we (the fans watching) participated in some Phillies promo video with the Gang.
I was also surprised to see SNL’s Jason Sudeikis there. Looks like he’s going to guest star in the episode. Guess he and Charlie bonded last summer shooting Going the Distance. Can’t wait to it air in the fall!
SOOOO jealous.
